Our Practice & Core Values
SPEKTRUM Health is dedicated to serving the medical and mental health needs of the LGBTQ+ community of Central Florida and our non-LGBTQ+ allies.
Our primary medical provider is a Nurse Practitioner (NP). What does this mean for you as a patient? NPs can diagnose medical conditions, order and interpret diagnostics testing and laboratory values, develop treatment plans, prescribe all medications, and determine successful goals and outcomes. NPs function very similar to what “medical doctors” do, but they are trained how to address health problems and promote wellness using the nursing model.
Meet Our Team
Joey (he/him) is the founder and president of SPEKTRUM Health. He has a wealth of experience working in a variety of healthcare practice settings. He has over 20 years of nursing experience and has practiced as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) for 10 years. He has formal training and experience in health policy and health law and serves on the executive board for the Florida Association of Nurse Practitioners (FLANP). Clinically he specializes in LGBT healthcare with a special focus on HIV treatment and prevention, STD treatment and prevention and medical care for transgender individuals. For fun he enjoys the sun and water. He is an active member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). He is also trained and holds certificates from the Mazonni Center in Philadelphia, PA for Transgender Wellness. Though he does not have any human children he is happy to have two four legged companions (Kimber & Speck).
Ann (she/her) specializes in mental health for the LGBTQ community! She is very experienced at working with individuals who are exploring their gender identity and/or pursuing gender transition. She has been an advocate and ally to the LGBT community since 1993! She can assist individuals with coming out (work, school, family/friends), medically necessary transition support (letters), gaining confidence, building their support system, and any/all aspects of transition. Ann can also treat a myriad of mental health issues including, but not limited to, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, personality disorders, schizophrenia, dissociative identity disorder, and much more.
“I do not *accept you, I *celebrate you”-Ann.
Lara (she/her) is a Registered Clinical Social Work Intern working in the Melbourne office. Lara is a graduate of the Florida State University College of Social Work. A longtime advocate for the LGBTQ community, Lara created and manages the website Creating Safe Schools, dedicated to helping educational professionals learn how to make their schools as inclusive and welcoming as possible. Lara is excited to join the SPEKTRUM team as a mental health counselor in Brevard. She sees the therapeutic relationship as one of teamwork, in which the therapist helps the client identify their personal values and goals. Then she works with her clients to discover strategies for achieving those goals, be they internal (such as learning new responses to difficult circumstances), external (such as creating situational changes), or inter-personal (such as improving relationship issues). Having previously been a teacher, and having worked in children's grief support, Lara has extensive experience with, and appreciation of, children and adolescents.
Originally from San Francisco, Denise (she/her) joins the SPECTRUM team with much enthusiasm and passion for the LGBTQ community and its allies. She earned her doctorate in nursing from the University of Central Florida, and her specialty is caring for patients who are twelve years of age and older. Denise regards empowerment and guidance as essentials in patient care, and she practices a holistic and sensitive approach when considering patient health outcomes. Among her interests, Denise finds joy in sharing a home with her wife and their four-legged children, Charlotte & Finny, and exploring all things cultural and diverse.
Lana (she/her) is the Office Manager for SPEKTRUM Health. Her diverse background and professional history provides a great perspective to our services! She considers herself a patient advocate and enjoys helping people access and navigate the healthcare setting.
Emma (she/they) is the Administrative Coordinator for SPEKTRUM Health’s Melbourne location. As a member of the LGBTQA+ community themselves, they enjoy being able to assist patients in making them feel comfortable and getting the proper healthcare they deserve without fear of judgement. Originally from Maine, Emma lives in Melbourne with their husband and their three cats, Lynx, Chappie, and Boogie. They enjoy music, playing video games, and spending time with friends and family.
Megan (she/they) is a Clinical Assistant working side by side with our providers at SPEKTRUM Health. They enjoy one on one time with clients and patients and enjoy helping people feel comfortable in a new setting. Megan is working toward an advanced degree in the medical field and is using their experience at SPEKTRUM to help determine their path!
